Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Symphony and Asheville Buncombe Youth Orchestra to Enjoy Collaborative Weekend

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (MAY 4, 2016) –The Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Symphony and the Asheville Buncombe Youth Orchestra will take part in a collaborative weekend retreat May 13-15, 2016, at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina.

The two groups will take part in a weekend of outdoor hiking and social activities, attend an Asheville Symphony performance at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on May 14, and rehearse and perform in a side-by-side concert on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium in Brevard.

Approximately 30 Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Symphony students plus parent chaperones will depart from Winston-Salem on May 13th, providing an opportunity for musicians to collaborate and socialize with their peers in Asheville, as well as have the opportunity to experience live classical music by the Asheville Symphony. This is a new partnership between the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Brevard Music Center, and the Asheville Symphony and Youth Orchestra.

“We’re so excited to begin this partnership with the Brevard Music Center and the Asheville Symphony and Youth Orchestra,” said Stephen Mulligan, Assistant Conductor for the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Conductor for the Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Symphony. “This weekend will provide our young musicians the opportunity to build relationships with their peers, be inspired by both natural beauty and live orchestral performance, and work towards the culminating side-by-side concert. Our hope is that this weekend retreat will become an annual project and bring more collaborations with regional arts organizations.”

The Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestras is part of the Winston-Salem Symphony and includes about 90 student musicians. The Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestras are currently comprised of two full orchestras and a string orchestra for aspiring musicians in the first through twelfth grades: the Premiere Strings, led by Fabrice Dharamraj, is a strings ensemble for young musicians; the Youth Philharmonic, led by Margaret Rehder, is a full orchestra for intermediate level students; and the Youth Symphony, led by Stephen Mulligan, is a full orchestra for advanced students.
