Winston-Salem Symphony Announces 2016-2017 Discovery Concerts for Kids and Messiah Dates!

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (MAY 5, 2016) – The Winston-Salem Symphony, Robert Moody, Music Director, announces its 2016-2017 Discovery Concert for Kids Series and the dates for the 2016 performances of Handel’s Messiah.

All concerts will take place in historic Reynolds Auditorium at 301 Hawthorne Road NW in Winston-Salem.

Salute to Superheroes
Sunday, November 6, 2016, 3 p.m.
(preconcert activities begin at 2 p.m.)

From superheroes on the big screen to our hometown heroes, hear the music that celebrates extraordinary strengths. Come dressed in your superhero costumes and join the Symphony as we salute comic book champions from film as well as our local firefighters, police, and veterans in a special on-stage tribute!

Symphonic Sports Showdown!
Sunday, January 29, 2017, 3 p.m.

Are you team strings or team brass? Join the Symphony for a party that will get you moving like no other! Bask in the stirring sounds of sporting glory, put on your team colors and get ready for a showdown! (No trash talking allowed.)

Enchanted Fairy Tales
with special guests Paperhand Puppet Intervention

Stories and legends of old come to life through music and puppetry! Enjoy the magic of storytelling through music and wonder as Paperhand Puppet Intervention joins the Symphony to bring life-size puppets, masks, movement, and sound together for an afternoon of magical delights!

Paperhand Puppet Intervention is a puppet theater company based out of Saxapahaw, NC. For over 15 years, they have been using cardboard, cornstarch, bamboo, old house paints, and other assorted materials to create incredible giant puppets, masks, shadow plays, and performances for all ages. Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s mission is to use diverse styles of puppetry and artistic expression to create works that inspire, promote social change, and are deeply rewarding for all involved. Handel’s Messiah

The Winston-Salem Symphony’s annual holiday performance of Handel’s Messiah will take place on December 13 and 14, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. The Winston-Salem Symphony Chorale will join the Symphony along with guest artists Margaret Carpenter Haigh, Soprano; Daniel Moody, Countertenor; Jonathan Blalock, Tenor; and Theo Hoffman, Baritone.
